Both founders of the Olivivia brand, Matthew and Vivia, have a deep-rooted connection to seafood, particularly bottarga, in their family histories.
Matthew's family in Taiwan has been running various restaurants, notably seafood establishments. He has a special affection for seafood, especially fish roe. In his childhood memories, he often visited his grandparents in Tainan, where he witnessed the entire process of catching and processing fish roe. He even helped his elders in packaging the roe. Beyond the delicious, salty, and tender taste of fish roe, these were precious moments of his youth, tinged with nostalgia.
On the other hand, Vivia, while living in Europe, was an avid explorer of various cuisines. One summer in Southern Italy, she encountered a unique dish: Spaghetti alla Bottarga, where pasta was adorned with a generous serving of fish roe pearls and fresh cilantro. It was incredibly delicious and left an indelible mark on her culinary memory.
One afternoon, after watching the documentary "A Bite of China" and its portrayal of Taiwanese fish roe, both Matthew and Vivia independently had the same thought: "We should introduce this unique delicacy to more people."
